Selena Gomez has been in the spotlight since she was a child. Her career began on Barney & Friends, and since then it has expanded into many different areas. Throughout her years, Selena has dabbled in producing, beauty products, advocacy, and one of her most notable paths, singing/songwriting. However, even with all her achievements, she has received a lot of negativity from the media about her singing ability. Selena has always managed to prevail through the hate but that might change soon.
In 2020, Selena came out with her album, Rare, which peaked at No.1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. After going through many traumatic events since her album, Revival in 2015, Selena wrote this album as a way to heal. She commented to NPR, “I want to be able to tell my story the way that I want to tell it. And all of these things happened, ….. a few of the worst moments of my life. And I don’t know if I would have made it. And that’s medical reasons, obviously, and emotional reasons. I just had to find a way to claim my story.” In all, Selena was very proud about the album as she wanted to spread the message, “you’re unique and you’re rare,” to her fans and supporters.
Unfortunately, during a performance for the American Music Awards (AMA) Selena was not at her best. There was a lot of media attention about her performance at he AMA’s which caused some people to do reactions to it. Comments on YouTube stated, “I hate how her fans be calling people haters for pointing out she legit can’t sing. Like girl, I’ve tried seeing her live performances and she’s simply not a talented vocalist” and “I feel terrible for saying this, but those vocals aren’t even that hard to hit. It would be different if she needed to hit a higher range and missed it but….the entire song?”
There was a lot of speculation about what had happened to Selena that night. It was released that Selena experienced a panic attack right before her performance which explained why she was off-key and nervous. A little while after the performance, she went on to the Kelly Clarkson Show and stated, “I know that people may not think I’m the greatest singer. But I just work my ass off. I really love writing and creating and creating melodies and growing.” Almost a year, after the AMA’s performance and Rare’s release, Selena had a conversation with Vogue about her music career, “It’s hard to keep doing music when people don’t necessarily take you seriously… but I think the next time I do an album it’ll be different. I want to give it one last try before I, maybe, retire music.”
Many were not thrilled about this statement from Selena. Rapper, Cardi B, voiced her opinion on Twitter, “I don’t think Selena should retire. She makes good music & her fans love her. I think she needs one more Era. An edgy one that no one ever seen her as.” Besides, celebrities, fans of Selena are also commenting that she should not retire just yet. She was even confronted by a fan who repeatedly said to her that “you cannot retire by the way”.
It is still up in the air if Selena was serious about her statement but regardless, because of the excessive hate she has received through social media it has probably been something she has thought about. Though Selena has been receiving criticism from people since childhood, she proves that it still can be hard to deal with even as an adult. Fans and supporters are hoping that does not stop her from releasing more music as the years go on. Until then, Selena Gomez’s Spanish EP, Revelación, was released on March 12, so hopefully more listeners are supporting her current music adventures.
