Why do we love confession pages?

Instagram and Facebook have a multitude of confession pages, and their primary target is college and high school age students. While Twitter has confession pages many popular ones have been inactive for years. UMDconfessions had their last post in 2015 and Umich Confessions had their last post in 2014. On the other hand, Collegefession on Twitter still remains active.

One of the most popular confession pages on Instagram includes collegefessing, which contains confessions and memes of college-age students in the U.S. and Canada. The confessions can range from embarrassing stories, relationship problems, and admitting crushes. In addition to a general confession page, many colleges include their own confession pages.

The second-largest college in the U.S., the University of Central Florida, has confessions specifically for the class of 2024 on ucf.confessions. Rutgers University, the 13th largest college in the U.S. has a page rutgersmissedconnections. The ivy leagues and top tier colleges also are within the loop. Stanford has an Instagram page stanfordmissedconnections and the University of Pennsylvania has upenn.crushes

Confession pages are managed by an unknown user and individuals can submit anonymous confessions by messaging the page. While these confession pages started at the college level, they have trickled down to high school and middle school communities as well.

These posts instigate a variety of reactions. Sometimes students use these pages to reveal their insecurities or teenage angst. In turn, peers offer words of encouragement and sometimes include links to helpful resources. Other users in the comments can reveal if they’re going through a similar struggle. Sometimes users who are too intimidated to approach their crush in real life can confess through these kinds of pages to avoid a real confrontation.

Other times, these pages can create a platform for cyberbullying where the comments shame the person for what they have done. Rather than sympathizing with the confessor, followers of these pages often feel that they’ve got what they deserve.

Regardless of the reason, these pages are captivating for their crazy stories and anecdotes that induce laughter and allow others to learn the anonymous gossip of other people at their schools.

The hormonal drive in young people allows these platforms to thrive. The idea of “young and dumb” was generated to reflect the crazy and irrational actions of teenagers and young adults. While the phrase has a negative connotation These pages provide a platform for teens to live freely and talk about those experiences anonymously.
