Many celebrities tend to expand their following by doing different and interesting things to grow their brand. Often influencers create merchandise such as t-shirts or hats that their fans can wear to show their support. Some influencers have created their own makeup or skincare lines such as Selena Gomez with Rare Beauty and Kylie Jenner with Kylie Skin. Another creative outlet multiple celebrities have tried is videogames.
In early August, it was announced that Ariana Grande would be a part of the popular video game, Fortnite. Fortnite has become one of the most played and influential games in the last couple of years. The game is filled “with matches lasting 20 minutes or less, the short format of battle royal fueled a competitive online spirit”. Ariana Grande will be a part of the concert that the game is holding from August 6-8th. It is part of the virtual world’s Rift tour, where “players get to play along in several minigames and experience new settings, all while a virtual version of the pop star “[Ariana Grande] performed some of her most famous songs”. To join the concert and be a part of the action, gamers need to RSVP and have the most updated version of the app.
BTS, the biggest global boy band, had their own video game called BTS World where, “players take the role of BTS’ manager, going through various journeys with each of the seven members from 2012, prior to their debut, to 2019”. It was an interactive story based on storylines that took place since the band’s debut. The game even won two awards in 2019 for the concept. However, it did receive some backlash. Not everyone liked the dating feature the game provided as it felt awkward for players to potentially “date” BTS members. Additionally, the only gender the game had for players was female. Though an abundance of the BTS fanbase may be female, it wasn’t inclusive to other people’s identities.
Another video game was Kim Kardashian: Hollywood. The game surrounded itself with the idea of gaining popularity from nobody to an A-list celebrity. Additionally, Kim Kardashian’s virtual character was repeatedly seen in the game as the players advanced in the next steps. Similar to the BTS world, it is an interactive story.
Demi Lovato created her own virtual character by partnering up with the episode. Episode is a story-based game, where players can choose which narratives excite them as they play the main character and try to capture the story in their own unique way. Demi Lovato: The World Tour is about an inspiring singer who wins a chance to go on tour with Demi Lovato, and the story expands from there. Throughout the game, the main character (the player) battles trying to find themselves as a singer with the issues of love, drama, and more!
