On November 1st, Travis Scott deleted his Instagram account with no explanation. Scott is one of the most popular rappers in the world right now and his social media reflected that. Before it was deleted, his account had almost 40 million followers and 3053 posts placing him at the lower end of the top 100 most-followed Instagram accounts. Millions of fans were shocked and speculation began. It didn’t take long for a specific assumption to be made and much of the internet thought they knew exactly why the rapper left Instagram.
On the night before the deletion of his account, Scott posted a photo of his Halloween costume, a very personalized version of Batman, and it went viral. The internet was incredibly unkind to Scott and millions of people began to share the photo of his costume to ridicule him. Some of the jokes included calling Scott names like Ups Batman, Chocoman, and even Roachman. On all accounts, this was an internet-wide case of cyberbullying.
The account was deleted by the next morning after this post. This lead many to assume the intense Halloween cyberbullying was the reason he deleted his account, but reports have since come out refuting this explanation. According to an exclusive report from Page Six, Scott left Instagram to focus on family and Halloween had nothing to do with the decision.
This explanation does make some sense, Scott has a two-year-old daughter to look after, and his relationship with the mother, Kylie Jenner, is unclear. They split up in 2019 after two years of dating and having a child. There are some reports the two are trying to work things out and possibly get back together and their relationship over the past few months has seemed healthy. The night he posted the photo, Scott was actually attending a costume party for Kendal Jenner where Kylie was in attendance.
The past year was maybe one of the biggest in his career for Travis Scott. He’s recently worked on partnerships with Tesla, Mcdonalds, Fortnite, and now Playstation 5. It’s important for him to not get wrapped up in social media so this explanation of why he deleted his account makes sense. However, it is probably a mix of both reasons. That amount of online harassment for almost no reason would be painful and stressful to anyone, and at the peak of his career, it’s just not something he needs to deal with.
In addition, Scott sent a strong message that he was not on social media interacting with fans, and giving them an inside look into his life only to be harassed like this. Other celebrities might want to take note, as this kind of situation is often handled much worse, sometimes leading to public mental breakdowns or any other kind of behavior that embarrasses the public figure and fails to silence the harassment. Having public figures on social media platforms like Instagram is a privilege, and if fans want to keep that privilege they better start acting like it.
