English actor Rupert Grint just achieved an impressive Instagram world record. He became the fastest user to acquire one million followers in all of the app’s ten-year history. His time was an astonishingly short 4 hours and 1 minute, which surpassed the previous record of 4 hours and 44 minutes. The previous record-holder coincidentally was Sir David Attenborough, another English media icon.
Grint’s most widely known for playing the character Ron Weasly in all 8 Harry Potter movies. His ability to break this record by such a wide margin was likely due to the incredibly large fanbase of this series. Being a big part of one of the most popular franchises in the world could help a great deal in that regard. Thousands of Harry Potter fans rejoiced in the comments of his first post, a reveal of his newborn daughter.
Even fellow actor from the series Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy, came to leave a comment saying, “Welcome Weasley, it’s about time.” That post now has over 100,000 comments and 3 million likes. At the time of writing, his follower count has more than tripled 1 million and now rests at 3.3 million.
While still impressive, this new world record is too surprising. Grint is 10 years late to Instagram and joined at a time when the user base is at its highest. It’s rare to see celebrities of this caliber joining social media and we’re already starting to see them leave. If every celebrity were to join Instagram in 2020 with the current userbase, it’s almost certain someone else would be able to break this record by a larger margin.
