The Bachelor/bachelorette franchise has been on air since the early 2000s and the popularity of the show has been growing ever since. TV watchers cannot get enough of the drama, romance, and comedy between the contestants and the bachelor/bachelorette. LGBT fans of the show have not been able to see representation of themselves for years since the series has focused more on the heterosexual community until recently.
Early this year, Colton Underwood made headlines when he came out to the public as a gay man. The retired NFL player was the bachelor for season 23 so it came as a shock to many people that he was hiding his sexuality. As Colton grew up, he was “pushed into that direction by his church and small-town” to shy away from his true self. At the end of the season, he did end up with one of the contestants, Cassie Randolph. They were together for a while after the finale but broke up months before Colton revealed the news to the world.
He did a televised interview with Good Morning America to release the news. Ever since coming out, he has been the “happiest and healthiest”. To document more about his journey, Underwood is having his own Netflix show. The show will arrive later during the year.
During season six of Bachelor In Paradise, contestants Demi Burnett and Kristian Haggerty revealed their relationship to the public, in which they made history as the only lesbian couple in the franchise. However, that may all change since Australia’s version of the series announced they are having their first openly bisexual bachelorette; this means that there will be male and female contestants trying to win the heart of Brooke Blurton. Additionally, Brooke is bringing diversity to the franchise as she will be the “first indigenous lead, as a Noongar- Yamatji woman”. This is not Brooke’s first time on the series as she has also appeared on The Bachelor and Bachelor in Paradise. Hopefully, this time around her luck on the show helps her find the love of her life. She commented that, “I am so ready for this. I’ve done it twice before and now, having the opportunity to choose my person and who I want in my life, is a truly unique and special experience. My perfect person is someone that loves me for me. I hope they offer shared values and compassion for others. All the dreamy things! I’m so excited and hope that I finally find that person I’ve been waiting for.”
Osher Günsberg, the host also had something to say, “We are a nation of people from so many different backgrounds, so many different cultures and so many different experiences, yet we all have one thing in common – we all want to be loved in a way that is meaningful to us. I can’t wait to get started on helping our Bachelorette Brooke find that kind of love.”
