It’s not uncommon for social media users to take a break from using their apps as social media can be draining at times; some users need a couple of weeks or more to relax and refresh their brains. However, Lorde took a two year longer break from social media.
Lorde, a New Zealand singer-songwriter, created the alternative hit “Royals” in 2013 and the song became very popular. Billboard noted the song as one of the songs that defined the decade; Lorde won a Grammy for Song of the Year with “Royals”. Her second album “Melodrama” was ranked among the best albums of the decade in 2017. Since then, she has taken a break from her music career and an 18 months break from the spotlight. However, it seems as if Lorde has begun to make her comeback.

In August fans noted that it had been 1,000 days since Lorde was active on social media but in October, she took fans by surprise when she posted eight Instagram stories. She encouraged her New Zealand fans to vote in the election, which was determining the membership of the country’s parliament. In one of the Instagram stories, she posted, “We know we live in a special place. And adding all of our voices to the conversation, speaking up for communities or organizations that mean something to us – that’s what helps keep it that way.” Throughout those Instagram stories, she gave multiple reasons why people should vote and hoped her fellow Kiwis would join her.
Besides her main Instagram, lordemusic, she had an account devoted to rating onion rings, called onionringsworldwide. In 2017 fans discovered that the onion rings account belonged to Lorde, and Lorde deactivated the account. The account only had 24 followers at the time and those followers were people who were close to Lorde. But recently, Lorde has decided to reactivate the account. She even stated in a caption of one of her new posts “this reviewer stopped ordering onion rings after her identity was leaked to the press in the great debacle of 2017.” The reason for her absence was because she felt “embarrassed” to order onion rings after her account was released. Nonetheless, Lorde thought, “that some things are too good to let the internet spoil.” The account now has almost achieved 17 thousand followers.

Lorde had an interview last month where she provided the reason why she quit social media and left the spotlight. She explained, “apart from feeling like I was losing my free will, was the massive amount of stress I was feeling about our planet, about systematic racism and about police brutality in this country.” This is an understandable reason as these social problems have been all over social media and it could be draining to anyone.
Fortunately for her fans, Lorde has given an indication that she would be coming back to the music scene as she wrote in an Instagram story, “And next year I’ll give you something in return.”
