It seems like every iconic TV show of the early 2000s has had its series finales by now. Fan favorites like Criminal Minds, One Tree Hill, The Vampire Diaries, Gilmore Girls, and more have had their ending conclusions. But what about Grey’s Anatomy? Grey’s Anatomy has been on the air for so long that it has crossed at least three generations. Nonetheless, people are continuously wondering when the last words of the Grey’s Anatomy characters will finally be said.
In 2005, Grey’s Anatomy premiered the lives of five surgical interns as they try to navigate the surgical world while trying not to let their personal lives get in between. The series has been on for 16 years thus it’s not a surprise that most of the original cast is no longer present in the newer seasons. However, no character departure will compare to when Derek Shepherd was killed off the show. “Meredith and Derek were the epic love story” so it was an emotional shock to fans when during season 11 Patrick Dempsey’s character died. Although, 2020 might have brought in the newest emotional shock.
Recently, one of the most shocking and surprising events happened during the season 17 premiere. Grey’s Anatomy is staying up to date as the show has incorporated the pandemic into the storyline. So, when Meredith Grey, unfortunately, gets Covid-19 she starts having hallucinations in her dream and one of the first characters she sees is her late husband. Fans were astonishingly shocked at this reunion as no one ever thought such a thing would happen. Due to the pandemic, Ellen Pompeo stated, “There’s just so much darkness, and we knew that coming together would be a little ray of light. And so, I think we had the same idea, at the core, to want to help people and bring a smile to people’s faces. So, he loved the idea, and we were just so excited, and we had a ball filming it,” about the reason why Derek came back. Therefore, as the season goes on people are wondering if more old cast members will make an appearance in Meredith’s dreams. But more importantly, people are wondering if Grey’s Anatomy is close to ending as the show has not been renewed for season 18 yet.
Ellen Pompeo was asked if season 17 will be the final season during an interview with CBS Morning and she commented, “honestly have not decided… really trying to figure it out right now.” This news has rattled the fans as it will be insane to think about Grey’s no longer airing on TV. But is the time right for the show to end? That is one of Ellen’s hesitation as the show has changed so many lives, “To end a show this iconic… how do we do it? I just wanna make sure we do this character and this show and the fans… I wanna make sure we do it right.”
On the bright side, if Grey’s Anatomy is coming to an end, fans should be glad that the people working on the show will make sure to end the show in the right way. Until the news of the possible renewal, TV watchers can catch the spring premiere of the show on March 11th on ABC at 8/7 central.
