After undergoing surgery that almost cost her her life Crystal Hefner, American model and wife to the late Hugh Hefner, took to Instagram to share her experiences with plastic surgery. She showed the bandages on her breast, and commented, “I had a fat transfer surgery October 16 and almost didn’t make it through.” In 2016, she removed her breast implants and other toxins in her body because she got sick. Crystal did not plan on taking in part of any other plastic surgeries. However, she stated, “I should have learned my lesson the first time, but I guess the universe keeps sending you the same lesson until you learn it.” Crystal is reinforcing how the world tends to ignore the real harms these surgeries can cause to other’s bodies and mental health.
Anne Wallace, a plastic surgeon, told Forbes “People think it’s like going out to lunch” when in reality, “like any surgery, it needs to be taken seriously.” Plastic surgery can be dangerous which is why patients must know what they are walking into. Patients should be as educated as they can about their procedure before they make any decisions.
One of the biggest possibilities and worries is that the surgery may not come out like how someone may want it to. Plastic surgery can sometimes lead to “unnatural results and/or scarring.” Patients are “often let down by the reality” of what their surgeries look like which can cause depressive episodes. People prefer their plastic surgery to look natural and, when it doesn’t, it can have negative effects on someone’s self-esteem. In addition, patients who aren’t financially secure and psychologically stable aren’t the greatest patients as “a person who is already insecure about an aspect of their appearance may suffer a severe blow to their confidence if the surgery goes awry.”
Besides the appearance of the surgery, there are multiple side effects that come after having surgery. With most surgeries, patients can have pain, be restless and their body parts can swell up. Also, there is a possibility of nerve damage, excessive bleeding, and infections. When plastic surgery is marketed on the internet, they tend to leave out these important facts and dangers.
In her post, Crystal Hefner explained, “I lost half the blood in my body and ended up in the hospital needing a blood transfusion” after her fat transfer. Other celebrities have spoken out about how scary and dangerous plastic surgery can be as well. The Real Co-Host Adrienne Bailon stated, “wanting to feel like a woman” is what drove her to do the surgeries she now has removed. Sharon Osbourne, The Talk Co-host, commented “Oh, I should never have done that. …So, I’m like, ‘No more. No more abuse’ ” about her surgeries. Heidi Montag, an American TV personality, explained how she “died for a minute” during complications in plastic surgeries.
It’s important to understand the dangers of plastic surgery and hear the reasons why people regret doing it before taking the procedure. It is surgery, so it should be taken as seriously as possible; the possible repercussions may not be worth it. Nonetheless, plastic surgery is a choice people make for themselves, but possible patients should not be ignorant about what they are getting into.
