CBS’s Comedy Mom Has been Cancelled

For TV show lovers, nothing is worse than hearing that their favorite show has been canceled.  Sadly, this is the news that Mom fans received recently. After eight seasons Mom has become the second show to be canceled by CBS this year. Mom has been on air since 2013.

It follows a mother-daughter duo who are both struggling with addictions; they are trying to help each other and themselves by rebuilding their lives. For dealing with topics such as addiction, relapse, teen pregnancy, overdose, and more Mom has received an abundance of praise. It does an excellent job at balancing out the funny moments on the show with these challenging topics. It’s no surprise that the show has been able to maintain its steady viewership of at least 8 million per season.

One of the reasons for the show’s cancellation is that Anna Faris, who played Christy Jolene Plunkett, made a shocking departure from the show after season 7. Just weeks before production began, it was announced she would not return as her role in season 8. Farris commented on the situation, “the past seven years on Mom have been some of the most fulfilling and rewarding of my career…. while my journey as Christy has come to an end, allowing me to pursue new opportunities, I’ll be watching next season and rooting for my TV family.”

Chuck Lorre, creator of Mom and Two and A Half Man, continued Two and A Half Man when one of the lead characters was fired. However, even with the continuation of season eight without Anna, it did seem like the end of Mom was nearing. Additionally, Chuck Lore made a comment about the end of the show, From the beginning, we set out to tell stories about recovery from alcoholism and addiction that are rarely portrayed in a network comedy series….whether it was the emotional reactions of the live audience on tape night inside Stage 20, or discussions at the White House regarding the opioid crisis, or the personal stories we continue to receive on social media, we take great pride in knowing Mom has positively impacted so many lives. We are forever grateful to our brilliant cast and guest stars, wonderful writers, and amazing crew for going on this journey with us.”

Nonetheless, fans are not ready for the end of Mom. There has been a petition going around using change.org to try and change CBS’s mind about the cancellation. Fans are even asking if there is a way for another streaming service to pick up the show if CBS cannot save it. Allison Janney, who plays Bonnie, shared the petition and tweeted, “Mom Fans are the best.”

For now, after 120 episodes Mom will come to an end. The series finale will premiere on Thursday, May 6th.
