On Feb. 10, 2021, Paramount Pictures released the announcement for ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ and its release on April 8, 2022. Hinted at the end of the first movie, the character Tails made an appearance, and on the official logo of ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2,’ a pair of fox tails is depicted on the “2,” further confirming Tails’ debut. The character designs haven’t been revealed yet, so viewers can possibly expect a similar situation and controversy that the first movie, ‘Sonic the Hedgehog,’ resulted in.
After social media users bullied the creators of the live-action ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ movie due to Sonic’s appearance, anticipation for the film resulted in its success, especially as it was released during the beginning of 2020, unaffected by the pandemic. According to Variety, the movie made $57 million in the U.S. and made a global total of $100 million.
The original design of Sonic in the 2019 trailer depicted him with smaller eyes, teeth, and an overall lanky body. Backlash against the character design was heard immediately, and Twitter users called the design “an abomination” due to Sonic’s realistic appearance.
Jeff Fowler, director of the film, quickly took the criticism and adapted Sonic’s character into being more cartoon-like. Fowler tweeted the hashtag “#gottafixfast,” the release date immediately being pushed back.
In Nov. 2019, the second trailer was released with Sonic’s redesign. His new design fully encapsulated the cartoon-nature of the character, thankfully taking out the human characteristics from his appearance. The beloved cartoon character finally looked more like a cartoon, complete with larger feet, hands and eyes, smaller teeth, and a thinner waist.
Tails, a fox with twin-tails, is Sonic’s sidekick in the original franchise released by Sega. In the post-credits of ‘Sonic the Hedgehog,’ Tails was featured, resulting in excitement for fans who were familiar with the character from the original games and hinting at a sequel.
The announcement of ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ brings excitement, and although it’s far off, fans will surely anticipate the release of trailers. So far, there have been over one million views on the YouTube trailer and 44.2K retweets.
